In 2005, BGO’s founder Chewy found herself living and teaching in Japan. From kindergartens in the mountainous area, to junior high schools in the city centre, Japanese children demonstrated environmental consciousness in their daily lives. Wastes are sorted. Recycling is practiced wherever possible. Weeding and planting in schools, as well as still life drawing trips in nature taught them much about appreciation of nature’s beauty.

Modernity and consumerism has depleted much of earth’s limited resources and spouted much undesirable consequences. If there is one change in our daily consumption that could make a considerable impact on the environment, what would it be?

One of the most common products we consume would be cotton.

Cotton is present everywhere we live. It is in the towels we use, the bedsheets we sleep in, the t-shirts we wear, the daily personal care products we and our children use, like diapers, cotton swabs etc.

Cotton grown in the conventional way however, is damaging to our environment. According to aboutorganiccotton.org, conventional cotton farming devours about 1/3 of a pound of pesticides and fertilisers to produce enough cotton to make just one t-shirt.

With this in mind, BGO set out in 2007 to make organic cotton t-shirts not only available to environmentally conscious consumers living in Singapore, but also at an affordable price.
